Community, Culture and Health Around One Table

Sharing a meal is one of the oldest ways communities take care of each other. The monthly BIPOC Community Dinner gives people of color in Eugene and Springfield a regular, welcoming place to gather, talk and build the kind of relationships that make it easier to ask for help when it is needed. The dinner celebrates the food traditions of the many cultures that call Lane County home, and organizers shape each menu around ideas and feedback from the people who attend.

The dinner is part of the BIPOC Community Health Worker Program, a collaboration between the NAACP Eugene-Springfield Branch and HIV Alliance. The program grew out of the need to help community members navigate medical care during the COVID shutdown, and it continues to address barriers to care and the social factors that shape health outcomes. Community health workers with lived experience and cultural knowledge will be on hand to visit with guests and answer questions.

How the BIPOC Community Health Worker Program Helps

Finding a doctor, signing up for the Oregon Health Plan or arranging a ride to an appointment can feel overwhelming, especially for families who have been underserved by the health system. The branch’s community health workers help with exactly those tasks. At the BIPOC Community Dinner Eugene 2026, guests can learn how the program supports people with enrollment in OHP, OHP Bridge and marketplace coverage, transportation to medical visits, coordination with social services and referrals for behavioral health and substance use treatment.

The program serves adults 18 and older who identify as Black, Indigenous or a person of color and who live in Lane County. Anyone interested can talk with a health worker at the dinner or complete the interest form on the branch website.

Why Community Gatherings Matter for Health Equity

Health is shaped by far more than what happens in a clinic. Social connection, trusted relationships and knowing where to turn all influence whether people get the care they need. For BIPOC residents in a region where communities of color are often small and spread out, a reliable monthly gathering helps reduce isolation and builds trust between neighbors and the health workers who serve them. The BIPOC Community Dinner Eugene 2026 puts that idea into practice one meal at a time.

The dinner takes place on the last Tuesday of each month at the Lavender Network on Willamette Street. The NAACP Eugene-Springfield Branch thanks everyone who shares ideas and feedback, which helps the branch create meals and spaces that reflect the whole community.
